Suggestions Requested

Behold, our home:

This is an outdated picture, taken before we even moved in. We've changed very little on the outside, really, except that the second-story door is now a window. Anyway, we are hoping to move within the next year and so don't really want to undertake another large project. BUT we want to get rid of the second-story railing on the front porch.

We had considered actually removing the whole thing and replacing the porch, but since we are hoping to move soon we aren't motivated to put that much work into it. We are concentrating on small fixes/improvements around the house. So it needs to be simple, and cheap...

We want to remove the railing, but leave the roof intact. Any suggestions?

Is there a reason that it's not possible to just remove the railing? Do the posts go all the way up from the porch or something? If not, I would just remove the railing and leave the rest alone. Not sure that I have any other bright ideas though. Sorry I can't offer more help than that.

The railing could be removed, and that is probably what we'll end up doing. Our only concern is that all you have left then is a flat roof...which might not be very aesthetic. Since we're hoping to sell, we want it to be "pretty" or at the very least not look stupid!

Maybe you could put some sort of trim around the top of the flat roof? I'm sure that changing the actual roof would be quite a lot of work. However, since you're in Wisconsin you also have to factor in the amount of snow that will collect on the flat roof and how long the current structure will be able to hold up to that kind of weight...although it obviously is already doing that since there is really no difference structurally between the roof with a railing and the roof without one. Good luck though, I hope that you can find a relatively inexpensive and not terribly time consuming fix.
